Depends

First, you need to tell us if their is a price limit.
Digital Cameras range from $100 to $35,000

There are several specifications, we need to know which one you are after.

Example Canon Elph 310 HS:

High speed burst - 6.4 shots per second.
Shot to Shot (no flash) 1.68 seconds
Shot to Shot (with flash) 2.84 seconds.

If you only need small photos (say 1920 x 1080 pixels):
A HD camcorder can take 30 shots a second.

An industrial high speed camera can take several thousand shots per second.

We can help you more if we knew what you are trying to accomplish.

The Nikon d5100 is a really good camera for it's price. High speed shots (4/sec), can take video with audio, multiple effects right on the camera, can take HDR photos and has an array of different lenses you can purchase for it.

For your price ranger, I would say this is a very good camera for you.
