What Tuner Car to Get?!?!

May 13, 2005 7:20AM PDT

ok, I plan on buying a nice tuner car soon since I am getting my licence in a while. I want to know what car you guys would recommend. I don'y exactly have alot of money to spend on the car but will be upgrading it. Couple questions:

1) what car can easily be modded and is fairly cheap
2) if I lease, can I still tune car (ie. lights, sound, etc.)

thx for the asnwers and for any other info u guys can give me Happy

u guys need some help...a lot of help!!!
Dec 14, 2005 11:37PM PST

I'm sorry, but i could not just go by letting this go by unoticed.
The cars that most of you guys are talking about are nothing any parents would give to their 16 year-old children.
Supra?! ...did someone say that a MUSTANG would cost too much insurance?

and btw...a mustang is an American Muscle car (to whoever said that a mustang is a tuner, LOL!)

Oh, and I'm more of a chevy guy..mustangs are alright, but a 1999? I'm sure there are a few good ones out there...lol, and a LOT of other ones that ppl drive cuz it's got the "Mustang" name on it, and it's cheap...don't get me wrong, my buddy owns a roush stage 3, and i agree it's very nice, but it doesn't sound like you (or your parents) can't afford something crazy..and having a fast car is a HIGH risk of auto accident for teens(hence the insurance)...i'm sure your parents wouldn't like that at all

to give you some honest advice...you're only about to get your license and your parents aren't rich, i'd figure..Have you even ever driven a manual before? it's nothing u can't get used to, but most ppl don't even learn mt at all these days! it's nice to have a dream, and make it come true...but don't try to pimp out your mom's old car. spending more money than a car is worth is not a good idea. don't waste the time and energy trying to look cool and drive fast...we have all done this(and sometimes still do)...AND we have all had friends die in stupid street racing accidents (whether it's their fault or not, they die and injur other people)...

what I did when i was 16...get whatever your parents will give you...and if it breaks down, FIX IT!..if it's an old car, i'm sure a few small projects would be fun and more gratifying. and later, go through college and get a good job...and even then, you still may not be able to get that dream car...goto college and come out driving a sweet nismo 350Z like me (parents helped me with that cuz I got a full scholarship to my university)...you should be tricking out a newer gen car that actually has a lot of potential before you even begin making mods. I was supposed to be looking for some nice stuff to do to my dash, but I saw this...just sorry.

if you go out and buy an expensive car you are dumb. the first car you get should be a beater. this is only because if you wrck it (which you most likley will) you wont care as much. thats just my view

muscle cars
Jan 30, 2006 9:58AM PST

yea i am sure muscle cars have tons of power, but you take that 30000 doller muscle car and put it up against a 8000$ used 3000gt and put about 5000$ into it, the 3000gt would not only smoke it in a drag race, it would handle 10000 times better then those led sled muscle cars. i also think that making your car look cool is the last thing you should do. i have an 93 integra, stage 3 clutch, flywheel, intake, coilovers, exaust headers and system, cams, and a few other goodies but it looks completely stock other than a little lower. so i'll pull up to a guy in a honda civic thats got an ugly body kit, hood scoops, and disguisting spoiler and a muffler to make it sound good. and when I hit the power he doesnt know what hit him, but hey at least he looks cool. i actually just smoked a chevy cobalt ss the other week. so for those of you who are dissin the little rice burner, most of them got more balls then any of ther other american led sleds that are 1/2 as reliable as a quality *** car. thats just my 2 cents.

you're a bit confused
Jan 31, 2006 5:03AM PST

when you talk about a $30000 muscle car, you mean one where the owner put all that money into the looks of the car, which usually means little to no performance. However, since the base displacement of a muscle car is vastly larger than that of your integra, or most any other rice burner stock (read: displacement, not horsepower or torque), there is a higher power potential. The imports use more advance tricks, like turbos or nos, to produce more power. But since the motor of a muscle car produces conciderable power naturally aspirated, adding a supercharger, turbo, or nos will push power past anything a little rice burner 4 or 6 cylinder car can make. And modern muscle cars (mustang gt, etc.) can be made to corner quite well with the addition of some quality suspension components. You can keep your little 4 cylinder engine, I'll take the cubic inches.

really??
Jan 31, 2006 9:54AM PST

discplacement really does not mean anything, an engine can have huge cyl. but if the engine is of poor quality it will still be slower. example: i used to have a z28, much bigger engine than my integra, so if your statement about how discplacement is all that matters is true, the z28 should be quicker right? Wrong!!!! when i would get that peice running it was pretty quick, but if you took my integra up against it, it wouldnt even be a race. but as you say, cubic inches is all that matters, i mean, take a 450 hp, 1.3 liter geo (thier is such thing, seen them drag), and put it up against a 450 hp muscle car that weighs twice as much and watch what happens, OHH, THE MUSCLE CAR LOST TO A GEO!!!! here, thought i would do a little research and, well here ya go.

hmmm, i bet that muscle car with all of its cubic inches would still win. and when you say if you add supercharger, turbo, or nos, you would still have a lot of "rice burners" that would easily smoke you, take a look into supras, wrx sti's, evos, skylines, a few of them could smoke a muscle car completely stock for the same price, not to mention, except for the supra (rwd) they are all 4wd and could outhandle ANY muscle car. have i made my point?

lancer?
Jul 8, 2006 12:06PM PDT

You only put 700 into a stock lancer and you burned a mustang? Mustang gts? I really wanna know how you did that with so little money. Turbo, underkit, and exhaust should set you back more than 700.

I would suggest you get a old civic. Easy to mod, cheap, vtec. The only thing about civics is that they are too common. If you can find something more unique. I am young too and just saved up money for the past 2 years. Just brought a 240sx. It was cheap, only 1,500. Almost have enough for my project, about 1k more and I should finish it. r32 engine swap, brembo brakes, aspen white paintjob, exhaust tip. All in all I should be pushing 400hp to the wheels. Anyway, good luck.

Tuner Car
Jun 26, 2006 3:05AM PDT

You can modify almost any car, but I feel japanese cars are easier and less expensive compared to European cars. Some of the easily modifiable cars in the market include honda civic's, scions and a few other small cars like the honda fit. The advantage of these cars is that they are not all that expensive to buy esp if you are getting a used one.You could end up saving a lot more if you do your own tuning and fitting the parts yourself.

theres tons of tuning capaple cars out there. but ur best bet would be a VW golf 2 door or GTi,a mitsubishi eclipse, acura integra, RSX, or a cobalt.just watch out if ur planing to put a turbo- it could really mess up some cars.

GOOD TUNER CARS ( Read )
Sep 7, 2006 11:59AM PDT

Ok , now I was looking up tuner cars for myself and found this. Whatever you do , don't get a scion. You'll want to buy a car with a somewhat good looking appearence and unless your favorite kids movie is The Brave Little Toaster save the scions for the geeks. Your going to want a car with these qualities :

-Front Wheel Drive ( I crashed my moms Benz drifting , stick with FWD )
-Inline Four Engine ( Good on gas , yet quick )
-Many Parts Available ( There is no point to buying a car that has no performance parts out there )
-Easy to work on
-AFFORDABLE

With all of these in mind you can narrow out your typical A4's , 3 Series , and SVT's. My favorite picks , from cars either I have driven , my friends have , or I plan on buying are :

Ford Focus Zx3 - This is my favorite tuner car because :

1.Theres almost as many parts for this as a Civic.
2.Great on gas getting close to 35 Mpg.
3.Very easy to work on.
4.The Zetech and Duratec Engines were Mazda built.
5.Good looking car
6.Great For the price

You can find a Focus Zx3 for as little as 3,000 to 4,000 is you look online. Look at places such as Craigslist.Org for cars

Volkswagon GTI - Now a little pricier it is a powerful car stock and has many performance parts already in it , as well as on the market. From personal experience my friend has a GTI and destroys other imports constantly.Be prepared for higher maitenence costs as it's an import.

Honda Civic/Acura Intega - They are good cars for the most part , reliable when treated right , but lets face it most people dont wanna fall into the same crowd and wanna look different. If your buying a Civic or Integra make sure you get the GSR Motor for the Integra and the B18 Motor for the Civic. Everything else is junk.

Nissan Sentra Se-R Spec V - Pretty pricy when buying new ( 20,000? ) But with a downpayment you can narrow it down to 250-300 a month. The Spec V has a power Inline 4 with 175 HP Stock. It is a great car for the price and power.

Those are my big cars for tuners in my opinion. Keep in mind i'm only 16 with minimal driving experience but have driven all types of vehicles ranging from a Mercedes to a Lincoln that I now own. The one thing about tuners is make sure you can afford it but make sure your not making it to easy on yourself. Theres no point in buying a car you can hook up in 2 days , you lose the fun. Overall everysingle car I named is made for tuning and can be done with ease.

Nissan 350z
Sep 29, 2006 5:49AM PDT

If you want alot of bang for your buck get a nissan 350z, 30k for a ton of power. But the modding is a bit pricey, but a good body kit on ebay is about 800-100 bucks, and a turbo kit is pricey though at roughly 5000. If you want a cheap tuner, but one that alot of people have that would be a honda civic. But eh, they're too common now, its just uglified, and you don't wana be a ricer.

Tuners...
Oct 1, 2006 4:35PM PDT

Ok im only 18, but i have a few muscle/tuner's that are worth looking in to.

The first being a 92-93 Ford Mustang 5.0 GT. The reasoning, is my friend has one hes put about 10k into...he bought it for 2k...hes pushing about 750hp at the wheels. all i have to say, is the car pops when downshifting.

the next car is a actual tuner, it can get pricey... but is one of the best investments u can ever make, Mazda miata, they have extrordinary handling and not too bad as far as a stock car goes. but i have seen CRAZY miatas. Like one of my friends that put 40k into his..... all i gotta say is 0-60=3.6s.... and hes able to take 90degree turns at anywhere from 90-120 without going crazy and drifting.

but that is for someone who wants to put crazy cash in a car... I would recomend the 93 mustang...enough said

What is it that you want from your car?
Oct 9, 2006 11:34AM PDT

The car you get should depend on what you want to do with the car. For instance, not all cars make good drifters. You can drift in any car, but some will take more work than others. A nice drifter is the 240sx. I would pick a 240 over a miata because Silvia S15's (look it up)look badass. Also, a car that i've seen left out is the 3000gt. I personally had a 1991 3000gt VR4, only cost around $6000. 3.0 liter V6, twinturbo, 300hp, AWD stock. Parts are widely available and relatively cheap. It's a little heavy of a car, but not too much heavier than a supra. 3000gt's are way cheaper than supra's as well. And look at the stats on the thing. Pretty amazing for a 15 year old car. Not to mention that they look awesome. You can find 3000gt's all the way up to 1999. Beware though, the 3000gt is a tad more difficult than a supra to mod. And expect to pay little more for insurance. Also, check out the nissan 300zx, i don't know that much about them but they seem to be around the same performance as supra's or VR4's. In any case, i recommend awd for overall performance. You will avoid most tire slip, have awesome control, and get more hp onto the pavement.
