What to look for in a computer for video editing?

Looking to purchase a new computer for basic to moderate video editing at beginner stage. PC or Mac? Is the Intel I-5 processor with 6 mb of ram and a dedicated graphics card a good start? Will 4mb of ram with a dedicated graphics card be enough or is 6 much better. Would a Dell studio or Sony Vaio be a good choice as a opposed to a mac or is mac really the best way to go.

If a PC is a good option what is a good and somewhat easy to use video editing program?

Thanks.
