General discussion

what to do with a semi-fast old computer?

Jul 27, 2005 8:24AM PDT

i bought this PC for $1500 about 4 years ago:
P4 2.8
1024 MB Ram
120GB HD
GeForce 4 Ti 4600
SB Audigy Gamer
DVD
CD-RW
400W PSU

Is there any way to sell it? I mean, I just don't want it to lie in the dust? Is there a reliable company that will take it, or some of it, off my hands? I'd like some money for it..

WELL, its not the problem, that its slow. No, its actually pretty fast. Its the problem it has. See it has once and a while BSODs and the sound card is busted, the motherboard has no working ports except for 1 keyboard port. What is a guy to do? I've been thinking to just send it to some GeekSquad person. Is there any other professional people who could fix a PC thats so screwed up? By my question, like they could maybe buy the CPU off me, or the drives.

All in all and its fast. If it was working, gosh I wouldn't probably ever think of buying another one. Its just that everyday new problems are coming up. Almost anything I put it dies, even brand-new. Ahhhh. You know, I'd rather have your PC than this piece of scrap metal. I've spend probaly $500, getting new parts, sending it to a local computer techie, and trying to fix it myself but I'm just giving up on it now. Since the day i got it, it was having problems. Well, I have learned my lesson: Don't buy from a generic company! I've been thinking to get that new emachines.
So the question is what to do now: Fix it? OR get a new one?

Keep it for another 6 months, until 64 bit, dual core and all that gets some support, then get rid of it for somethinng new.

the new hot computers out now for half the price we paid. I have almost the same PC as you with the Nvidia T4600 card. It will play all the current hot games...pretty dang good. Of course here comes BF2 which claims it won't play with the T4600, but there is a programmer on the net who says different, that the kids who developed the game were lazy and could have easily included the T4600. He has a free downloadable patch that he programmed that will let the T4600 play BF2 (so he says).

Like Paul says, and what I have been suggesting, have patience, and wait for the dual core to come down in price, also the good video cards out now will be coming down in price, and who knows if you wait long enough the new MS Vista will get off Beta and have the bugs out.Wink

PS...I'll be getting a Nvidia 6600GT AGP and just wait a real good while, for the future bargains to come.

Since you can buy the same system with essencially the same specs today for $500, network it and use it as a print server and a backup pc. That is, backup you harddrive to it. Or be like me...wait until you have six of them networked and try using them all at the same time. Wink

When I read your tagline I was expecting to find a 980mhz PIII or a 1Ghz Athlon.
The PC that I'm using at work is a 1 year old Dell 2.8 Ghz.
Dell and others still sell computers like yours, OK for around $400~500 but they still sell them. John

Yea, yea, but im sure your computers don't get daily BSOD's. Yea, i guess putting the work "old" in the subject line wasn't the best idea. I guess I could wait for a emachines that has Vista pre-installed.
