There are a few things to consider before you run out and buy speakers. First do you need 5.1 surround sound? If so does your current sound card or built on sound have outputs for 5.1? Or would 2.1 work better for you?

If you must have 5.1 or even 7.1 surround keep in mind that the games you play with it must be capable of producing a 5.1 signal or the extra speakers will do nothing.

If you have a DVD player you could probably watch movies in surround but I don't know too many folks that sit and watch movies on their computers except of course those of us who hook them up to our big-screen TV's.

Once you decide how many channels you need then it's always best to actually go and listen to a few examples before you plop down your hard earned cash. Best buy or similar stores usually have displays set up for just this purpose.

After you find a brand that sounds good to your ears you can always shop around for the best prices. Most likely you'll find the best prices online instead of at a brick and mortar store. Tiger Direct and Newegg are a couple of good sources.

If you find a system that fits your needs and wallet then it's time to look at a few reviews to find out what other folks have to say about the product you've chosen. To do this simply go to your favorite search engine (ie: google) and type in the product model number and the word "review". You will usually find many reviews when conducting such a search.

Here is a link to Newegg's speaker page if you want to have a look: http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=60

Good luck and enjoy your new sound system!
