Resolved Question

What smartphone can I get and not require a new data plan

Dec 13, 2011 1:02PM PST

I currently am a AT&T user and want to get a new phone - I'd like a smartphone - I have unlimited data for my non-smartphone and don't want to change to the more expensive plan. I've seen Pepe7 answer some of these questions but didn't find one that quite fit my situation. Anyway, is there an unlocked GSM smartphone or two out there I could get?

Those are definitely the low hanging fruit. Some HTC models as well, ones that are not carried by ATT anyway. It will set you back a little cash though.
Just make certain at purchase you are getting the correct UMTS frequency bands for use on ATT's network, especially if you end up with an unlocked Nokia from a third party. Quad band GSM-only handsets are no longer adequate in many ATT areas for good service. YMMV.
FWIW, I really like the C6-01 and C7-01 for unlocked GSM/UMTS handsets. They can connect practically everywhere globally. The N8's fun too Wink
