Answer
Canon IXUS 220 (aka Elph 300 HS) and Sony W630

This turned out to be more difficult than usual.

The Sony W630 is sold in Europe/Middle East and not sold in the USA.
I could not find a review on the W630 nor any sample photos.
In the USA the W650 seems to be equivalent to the European W630.

The Canon ixus220 is the Europe version of the USA model Elph 300 HS

Here is a comparison of the Canon Elph 300 HS and the Sony W650:

.......

To complicate things further there are some reported complains about both cameras.

Sony uses a 16 MP ccd sensor assembly which is noted for generating too much noise.
That causes Sony to be too heavy handed with applying noise reduction with its firmware.
This results in a loss of fine detail.

Canon IXUS 220/Elph 300 HS uses a wide angle lens that is too wide (24mm focal length) and not suited to that camera.
The images are soft (not sharp) on both the left and right sides.
You might want to consider the Canon IXUS 230/Elph 310 HS.
It uses a 28mm focal length lens which is sharper to the edges plus it has a 8X zoom.

I'm comparing those also

thankyou snapshot2. Your reply has been very helpful especially those complaints. I'm in Australia so model numbers vary but your info is close enough.

Very important for me is clear sharp images. I also like night & moon/star shots & lament the loss of my old faithful Pentax SLR. However these days I must carry the camera in my hip pocket while I work with horses so am constrained by size & therefore general quality to an extent. I found lots of good photo comparison info on youtube. There is direct comparison of these 2 cameras. I noticed the night shots had some softness due to noise reduction. Now I know why.

Sensor quality seems to be very important & that info not always easily available when searching in the data.

I too wondered about the difference between the 24&28mm focal length. They are good at hiding what they don't want you to read before you buy!
