What SD card for JVC GZ-MG20E/EK?

Can anyone help, I have a JVC GZ-MG20E/EK and I want to use the SD card for video. I tried using a SanDisk 4GB SD HC card. But camera took a long time to start up when turned on and it came up with an error. Also it would not turn off when I switched it off and had to take the battery of when the card was still in it. Is this because the card needs formatting, can't format it in the camera anyway as it does not let me. Or is there limit on the size of the card that it can use? Also would what I have done damage the card or the video cam?

is there a little switch on the sd card? maybe it got switched to read only by accident

There is a switch on there but it is not locked so I don?t think it can be that. Thanks for the help anyway.
