What's with this 10 day wait to get DSL to full speed?

Jan 13, 2005 1:40PM PST

I just got DSL and the install guide said it's best to leave DSL on and running for the first 10 days for it to reach it's peak speed? Is this true and if so why do you have to wait 10 days?

DSL

I was hooked up to sbcyahoo dsl and they said that during that time it would auto-configure itself to give the best service. I didnt understand it either, but it always worked ok. They only suggested that I leave the modem thing turned on, not the pc, which I was gonna do anyway.

I'm just guessing here as that statement makes sense only in this regard: you get a feel for what is an "average" for your connection. You'll always have better peaks at times but it comes and goes as related to the users at any given time, the bandwidth being shared. If the modem is auto-configuring then its sizing the packets for best handling, procurring overall best speed.

DSL Speed

I doesn't take the DSL any amount of time to get up to speed. You were just told that because the average wait time for DSL provisioning to check your phone line and provision DSL at your nearest CO (central office) is 8-10 busines days. You should have been given a start date (if you don't have your date you should get an e-mail confirmation from DSL or you can call tech support line and they will give you your ready date)when the DSL is ready to be used from that date you can load the software hook up the modem and go; anything before that date you will get nothing.
