What's up with my Firefox browser?

Jan 7, 2006 12:24PM PST

I'm using Firefox 1.0.7 and most of the time it loads flawlessly. However, at times when I click on the icon to open it up all I get is an hourglass that flashes constantly but the browser never loads. In task manager I notice cpu useage going to Firefox. So far I've managed to correct things with a system restore for my XP version of windows but I'd really rather find the reason and correct it and not have to restore so often. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Try upgrading...

The latest version of Firefox is 1.5, which fixes a lot of bugs, includes automatic updates from now on, faster browsing, etc. I too noticed that a few times using previous versions, but it hasn't happened since I upgraded.

Hope this helps,
John

Upgrading?
Jan 9, 2006 12:42PM PST

John, tried 1.5 to upgrade and go to preferences. Still no giff files showing up. Back to V7. Still very good.
I have not tried about:config., as you suggested.

Please remember I am a Mac user. The last set of instructions to me seemed to be for a windows user.
You lost me with numlines. One more try?
Thanks,

-Kevin

I didn't see this 'Browsers forum' until after I had posted in the 'Computer Help forum'. Sorry...hope I didn't tilt the axis of the earth in making an honest mistake!

Maybe a reason

This usually happens if Firefox hasn't closed down properly from the last time it was used. I've had this happen even with version 1.5 but not enough to be too much trouble. The quick cure is usually to go to Task Manager, select the Firefox entry and then click the 'End Process' button. When done, click the Firefox shortcut again and Firefox should open.

I've seen a few reasons given for Firefox not shutting right down, even though it appears to have done. It can be an extension causing the problem or perhaps because of the Java application. Some say the latest version of Java (1.5.0_06) does not sit particularly well with Firefox and that reverting to an earlier version solves the problem. I'm using the latest Java but since the close/open problem only happens rarely, I've decided not to worry about it at present.
