Updates to some of your programs may cause this. Antivirus software, firewalls, etc. Have you tried to turn off automatic updates? Also XP updates? How about a FAX program?

I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own image. - - Stephen W. Hawking
on occasion, when i use a dial-up on my laptop, i get a "modem in use,,,," message, that continues on if i continue to get the message, restart the computer....which i do and the dial-up dials in.
i called tech support and he said it's a hiccup that will happen occasionally. i will not accept this answer because it never happened before(on w98), and if it's a glitch, then they shoulda taken care of it.
does anyone have a solution? thanks
i am using xp on this laptop, which is brand new. i have no other connection that uses the modem. i also use the laptop to connect wirlessly, on occasion.
i have disabled the use of ie as default browser and use firefox instead, which i open MANUALLY(i do not have the dialer set to open fire automatically). the wireless connection is turned off before starting the dial-up.
