What's the difference? Which is better? (Proffitt)

Jul 10, 2006 10:45AM PDT

Hey,

My fiancee just bought a Compaq Presario V5204NR, (V5000 series) and it's got a Intel Celeron M 410 (1.46 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 533Mhz FSB) with 512MB RAM, 40GB HD and a 24x DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive.

I have a Presario V2582US (V2000 series) and it's got AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology, (1.8 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, up to 1800Mhz system bus) with 1024MB RAM, 100GB HD and a 8xDVD+-RW and CD-RW combo drive with double layer support.

My questios are: 1- which laptop is better? 2- NOT considering the features, which series is newer and/or better, The V2000 or the V5000?

I will appreciate your knowledgable feedback!

Thanks! Happy

I'd take the V2000....

While I'm not Proffitt, may I answer the why part of this...

The Celeron M is likely a worse processor than the AM Turion 64, there is more memory in the V2000, bigger hard drive that are all nice benefits, IMO.

The newer Intel line would be the Core Duo which will soon be the Core 2 Duo when Merom comes out in August I believe so it isn't the latest and greatest in a sense.

Thanks for the input

Anyone else can tell me which series is newer/better WITHOUT considering the features each laptop has?

Thanks.

still the AMD

the amd has a better processor architecture and a better processor family, let me put it this way, celeron is to AMD sempron as core/pentium is to turion. without any doubt the AMD takes the cake hands down, your comparing a honada to a porsche

That's similar to my neighbors.

The v2000 series with all the goodies cost them under 800 (unsure which exact model) and runs very well. The 1024MB RAM and dual layer DVD recorder make this one something that should be around for a few years.

I know the AMD is the best one but...

Which series is the newest one, which one came after the other?

Proffitt - mine is the v2582US, which has the 100GB HD and 1024MB Ram, AMD Turion 64. This laptop costs $1200 retail price without taxes Happy It's a sweet laptop, hey?! Grin

Thanks.

Just my observation
Jul 13, 2006 1:39AM PDT

But it seems that pretty much every stat from your machine either matches or beats the machine your comparing it to so from the standpoint of which one is better that should pretty much be it from what you listed. As for which one is newer their part of the same line I would think they debut within at most a few weeks of each other. As a side note one of the difference you may notice between them could come from the hardrive spin speeds I think your computer has a 4200 rpm while I think the other computer has a 5400 rpm drive.

Look at some of my posts and ...

You find me telling of swapping hard disks from such to 5400 RPM.

In the sub 1K category, and as fast as these machines are, the only observation is that once we start changing the hard disk, the video and more then the buyer is more likely a GAMER and not the usual laptop user of web, email, DVD play, music, school work, etc.

Gamers require an entirely different laptop.

Yes I know

I've read some of your post and I do remember your story about prolonging the life of your laptop with this type of upgrade and its true once you start upgrading past a point you really are looking at a different kind of laptop geared towards a different type of user. I know the 4200 rpm is better for power consumption and that is probably why it is in this laptop however from the nature of the posters question that he had maybe observed a difference in perfomance and thus was asking about which system was superior and may not of taken note of this difference if he thought his system was under performing. But anyways I agree with you for basic use this isn't really something you would need to be concerned with to much.

Thank you!

So my laptop wins, yay! LOL. I gotta say, they are both great laptops, we'll see what the one we just got does... it's only been 3 days since we got it, but so far so good.

Thanks for your help. Happy
