General discussion

what's the deal after thanksgiving?

Nov 20, 2005 4:59AM PST

I'm from Argentina. I still can't get what is the event after thanksgiving that leads to that "special day" at CNet, not the announced discounts at WalMart and all that you talked about. Is it like the last day of the discount season? (something I once lived through in London's Harrod's .... but it was on February!
To anyone who can explane that to me, thanks.
Jorge.

Actually....

It's the beginning of the Christmas shopping season (or as you might like to think of it, the beginning of discount season). In other words, all of the crazy people in the country crowd every shopping center in the country trying to get the "perfect gift" for everyone they know.

Day off
Nov 20, 2005 6:38AM PST

Traditionally, it is a day off for most people so, it is a good time to start the Christmas shopping season. So there are often great sales, especially recently there are a lot of before 10AM sales to try to get people out. Also that day has a lot of sports on TV, so many non-sports people go out shopping.

basically, it's the beginning of the christmas shopping season, and (I think) it's the day on which the most money is collected by stores in the US.

Thanksgiving
Nov 20, 2005 6:54PM PST

This is the time of year when Americans fire up thier Tivo's into overdrive. Some go out shopping while some sit in front of the TV (again) and watch football, THEN go to their Tivo's and watch MORE football because they can only watch one game at a time.
Traditionally, the houses of excess (i.e Walmart) open up early and price discount everything to start off the Christmans shopping Season.

I personally would invade the US at this time as everyone will be snoozing in front of their TV's because of all the Turkey they had eaten.

If you ever have the opportunity to enjoy Thanksgiving in the US, wear track pants because your waist line will gain a couple of inches and you will moan "I will never eat like that ever again".

No turkey was harmed in the writing of this post. Only my post is a turkey.

Here it usually starts at 6pm, December 24th.
(no , kiddin', there are all-night-open sales on december 23th, but i'm kind of out of the mood until new year's eve, since I'm jewish).
Thanks for the answers....one more thing. The helpdesk for the day after thanksgiving is then some event for all the people that bought gadgets the day before but has no idea on how to operate them?

the helpdesk

The Helpdesk is for ANYONE with questions about gadgets, but especially for people who want to buy a gift (hence being on Black Friday) and are not sure what to get!

It's gonna be a lot of fun, you should check it out!

behind the camera

I will be behind the camera (and phones and webcams) depending on the time of day!

But never in front! Happy
