What's happening with Thunderbird?

Would anyone know why Thunderbird won't let me delete messages? Pressing the delete button on an "unread" message just changes it's status to "read", pressing delete on a "read" message does nothing, and I can't even drag messages to the Trash. Can this be fixed without reinstalling Thunderbird?
