A top of the line non-DSLR will cost over $600.
I can't call it point-and-shoot, because it is much more than that.
It is about the price of the Nikon D50 (without lens).
You should start by checking the photo results of the two types of cameras.
Here are links for the Canon G6 (non DSLR) and the D50 (DSLR):
Compare the photos of the 2 1/2 story red brick building.
Look at the photos at full size:
Look closely at the street and traffic signs.
Look at the small white lettering on the dumpster.
Examine the grass and bushes in the lower right corner of the photo. Examine the bricks on the building.
For amateurs like me, how much better is a value priced dSLR (ie. D50 or Rebel XT) than the top of the line point and shoots??? Other than portraits (I need high quality for work), I'm a recreational picture taker. Trying to decide what to buy. Any help/advice greatly appreciated.
