Resolved Question

What Replaces Front Page 2000 for Windows 8?

Oct 12, 2014 3:11PM PDT

I've used FP since it came out in about 1994 and have updated it to 2000 and all my web sites are created with it. Now that I have Windows 8, I can no longer install it and need to know what program I can use which will work the same way that FP works.

I was a simple program and one that will work on the host server like FP and one I can create frames with, as well.

I looked at M$$ Exressions 4 and something called Virtual Studio and was totally confused. They are WAY more than what I need and I don't want to do projects with teams or work in the cloud.

Does anyone know of a simple program which works like FP always has and works on both the host server and in th Win 8 OS on my computer? I am beyond confused at this point. Everything I've seen from M$$ is major overkill for me.

I need help.

Thanks so much.

Re: Sharepoint designer

From your link:
SharePoint Designer 2010 is the tool of choice for the rapid development of SharePoint applications.

I've never seen any SharePoint Aplication I liked (they have some at my work). And you would need to have an ISP that runs Sharepoint and allows you to write applications for it for general use. I think that is much less common? than support for PHP, Wordpress or Joomla.

The thing is that FrontPage support is vanishing and since SharePoint is akin to FrontPage was on the publishing of content it's about as close as it gets. It's not the same (I agree.)

The current solutions tend to be more of the roll your own system. Even I fall back to simple(?) editors and FTP uploading even in today's modern(?) web times.

Thanks Bob for your input.

I installed the Share Point Design program on my Win 8 system and was pretty much overwhelmed with how huge it was... but it also was not at all satisfied with my puny Word 2000 and wanted me to buy a newer, way more expensive M$$ Office program... So, let's say that Share Point Design is now in the digital/magnetic "graveyard" where all the scattered bits and bytes go when I delete files.

ARGHHHHHH!!

I'm keeping my old XP system alive just for FP and PageMaker 6.5. When I was doing all of this stuff professionally, I had to keep upgrading, but now I work just for me and it should not be necessary. It's like a carpenter or a jeweler being required to throw out all the tools that fit their hands perfectly and get new ones because the stores need to transfer more money from his account to theirs.

I protest!! GRRRRRRR!!

Thank you so much, Bob. That's exactly what I wanted to know. And thank you even more for providing me a link.

I found the free Web Expressions and installed it. Now I will download and install this one and see which one I can make sense of.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for the help.

FYI... I have developed a very robust training program to help sufferers of PTSD who are Combat Vets, Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, First Responders, and their Spouses/Partners and I'm giving the classes and leading the support groups philanthropically for FREE and so, in helping me, you are also helping them. Oh... I'm also a graduate level psychotherapist.. so I'm not just helping them with computers. Wink

Thank you to everyone for the help. I think I'm on my way to solutions now.

You guys are the greatest!

There's no Microsoft product to replace this. I think it's not commercially attactive. It's mcuh to simple for modern commercial sites and business, and small static sites can't pay for it.

You'll either have to switch to a totally different non-Microsoft product, or see if FP 2000 still works on Vista or Windows 7.

Thank you Kees for responding.

I don't plan to do anymore complex sites with shopping carts and such. Mostly I want to be able to maintain my more simple brochure sites and create more simple brochure sites as I need them. My server host recommended Microsoft Expression Web or SharePoint Designer 2007. When I chatted with Microsoft and asked them, they sent me to Visual Studio and what I downloaded was so complicated that I was totally lost. It seems to be created for working with teams on projects and in the cloud... WAY overkill for what I want.

I'm looking for simple, to just work alone and from my desktop, not in the cloud, but will install on Win. 8. I"m renovating my old XP system so I can support FP 2000, but there's always the fear that the host will stop using the extensions, which would also put me out of business.

FP 2000 is a pretty simple program and what I hope to find is another simple program. It seems that today nothing is simple anymore. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks so much.

Sharepoint is more workflow application
Oct 13, 2014 11:03PM PDT

development system then Web designer. What I mean by that is apps the follow a workflow where say a person fills out say a form for a sick day. The employees fill the form out and it flows to a manager for approval. Whereas MS Expression Web is a web page development system. Workflow is not needed for Expression Web. My company uses Sharepoint for when an employee works at a higher wage for a week or so. The manager fills out the form to pay the employee at the higher rate the workflow directs the forms to HR for approval and once approved the workflow sends the data to payroll and then the data is imported to the time and attendance application and the employee is paid.

Thanks orlbuckeye...

That's a great analogy. I did download and install the free version of Expression Web and when I get all the programs reinstalled on my poor old computer, I'm going to play with it.

From day one back in the mid 90's when FP first came out I've only ever worked right on the host server. I guess by today's standards I'm pretty well "spoiled rotten."

The tech support guy at Fatcow, which hosts my sites, told me that Web Expressions will allow me to work on the server, but just poking around with it, I couldn't find a way to connect to the server, so I'm having my doubts about that. You know how we creative folks like to rely on our intuition and how impatient we are? LOL In my head I keep hearing some hollow, mechanical voice saying "Read the directions, dummy!"

I just might try that next.... maybe.

Thanks again for the input.
