Resolved Question

What replacement speakers can I use?

Feb 17, 2015 9:00AM PST

My wife has an old Aiwa compact stereo system, Z-L520, for which she no longer has the speakers. The amplifier is rated at 80 watts/6 ohms. The speaker system was a 6 ohm 3-way bass reflex system, SX-WZL520. Can I use Aiwa speakers SX-NAJ22 (3-way bass reflex) rated at 60 watts/ 6 ohms as replacements?

Sure, why not?

It's not like you'll crank the volume up to push 80 Watts. That said, if you feel you will then shop for speakers with 80+ Watts. Speaker specs like that can be easy.

1. Match the Ohms.
2. Speaker Watts (if you intend to move the dial to 11) should be greater than what supplies it.

Thank you.

I was told by a Best Buy "expert" that it was a matched system, and I could only use the same speakers. The only original pair I could find were located in England and were too expensive to ship. The speakers I mentioned above are listed on EBay in the US.

I appreciate your response.

Well, an audioholic would write that.

Here we are talking a little closer to Earth. That is, yes it may be true the system was matched. That is, and mind you have to talk a lot of salt along with skepticism that the maker matched the response curves of the speakers to the amplifiers here.

Frankly most off the shelf systems are not tuned like that. The Walmart and Tesco shelves are filled with products that battled it out for mostly the price and "the deal."

That said, I'm going to stand by my answer. Audioholics will disagree and have you empty your wallet.
