What MP3 Player, break away from iPods?

May 16, 2008 5:51PM PDT

I have the first iPod Photo, Its fat and the battery life is going. I would like to get an Mp3 that plays videos, on a decent sized screen, but that isn't so big that i can't slip it into my pocket. I want to be able to store quite a few/lot of videos and i want it to be easy to navigate between menues and songs/files. I have looked around but no one has really helped, i have looked at the:

* Cowan Q5 (Too heavy and big)
* Archos 604 (Looks good, but whats it like dealing with music files and internet, and is it that portable)
* ITouch (Its an ipod, but everything looks good apart from its only 32gb)
* Zen (no online / wifi, as compared to competition)

I am also wondering if anyone knows or can estimate when the next gen of touch ipods will be released, as i might wait for newer hardware.

Thanks a lot for helping

Any replies welcome

what is important to you?

Do you really want to go on the internet on such a small device? It's okay in a pinch, but I would never be on it for very long.

iPod Touch is great (I have one), if you like iPods. But do you really want to pay the premium for the touch screen, internet, and the possibility of additional applications? $500 is a lot for a 32GB device.

Spend half that amount, and you've got an 80GB Zune. Maybe the screen isn't big enough for you, but it's still pretty big for video. But no internet or touch screen. Still, half the price and it is pocketable. You were looking at the Zen too, and that has an even smaller screen. Even the 32GB Zen is $200 less than the 32GB Touch. And you can expand the memory via SD cards. You can't do that on the Touch. As far as I know about the Archos players, the newer 605s are a little smaller. The larger capacity ones are a little thicker, but they seem pocketable. You do have to pony up $30 for the Opera browser so you can surf the internet.

My guess for when the next generation of any iPod that is NOT the iPhone will probably be announced in September, perhaps in the second week. That appears to be the usual cycle of things. The new iPhone will probably be announced at the WWDC (World Wide Developer's Conference) on June 9 or thereabouts. The focus will likely stay on the iPhone and selling as many of those as possible, so I would not expect any announcement regarding a new Touch at that time. But whatever happens with the iPhone may give a peek at what is to come with the Touch. Also be on the lookout for competitors such as Creative or SanDisk to release larger capacity flash players. I haven't heard anything yet. If that happens in the next couple of months, Apple may follow, although not necessarily right away. Remember that the 32GB Touch didn't come out until a few months after initial release.

---> CAN ANYONE HELP, PLEASE REPLY WITH ANY INFORMATION <---

Thanks alot for your reply, it is more than i have got from anyone i know or any other online forums. Your oppinion is greatly appreciated. I deffinatly feel that the itouch appears to fit my criteria a lot more than any other player.

The only thing is, is the Archos (Cheaper, par addons, better screen?, worse music navigation?)

And i have been looking into the COWON Q5W, which is more of a graphics table / computer / mp3 / Portable movie player. It generally looks good but it is said to be heavy, and the dual interface is said to be annoying (That doesn't bother me), but the only thing is, how much space do i need for videos and music? 40/60 GB? I have no clue, and also is it that heavy? I also looked at the COWON A3, but i don't like the big screen, yet not touch screen concept.

The COWON Q5W is 5inch touch screen, 16 mil colours, WIFI, Bluetooth, Video and Music and Flash, Windows and Document viewer, pluss you can plug it into the tv and use a remote to watch films and surf on screen, and for music 13 hr battery life and 7hr video (I don't know how that compares with other mp3s). It weighs 380g with battery, is that alot?

Thanks for your reply,

you kinda got it

the 604 WiFi is a good price if you can find it (maybe refurb)
it comes with the web browser free, the screen is good (non-WiFi is even better)
but music navigation can get clunky but still works

Sony?
May 21, 2008 12:06PM PDT

The Sony mp3 players have the BEST overall reviews if you look around at the web buying places like amazon and best buy.

However, they are pricey AND they only go up to 16 gigs.

I went with IPod ONLY because 1) I needed more than 16 gigs and 2) the per gig price is WAY cheaper with IPod.

I have looked at this player, just now and am impressed. I know i can get 8Gb, but how much external memory can i include on one card? It is easy to navigate and sort through music and videos by artists and genres. Does it include software? Is it wifi enabled? Also when i insert and card do i have to navigate through awkard file systems, or does it split them into my music, text, photo and video categories?

Thanks alot
