I would never travel without my trusty iRiver H320.
As an international version, I can watch videos, hook up my digital camera and take unlimited pictures, using the USBOTG function, and listen to hours of music.

Yes, it's convient to be able to talk "almost" anytime.
But being a woman I find its an absolute Safety need.

Gotta have the cell!

Without a doubt it would be the cell phone. All the other stuff is great and real good boredom/time killers and productivity machines. But the cell phone is a must have for staying in touch and emergency situations. An mp3 isn't exactly going to dial 911 when you need it to.

leave that damn cellphone in the bag ..switched off!

I go to Thailand once a year. I take my noise-cancelling headphones, Two iPods, My laptop, two or more digital cameras and my miniDV camcorder. This stuff never leaves my sight until I check it into the Hotel safe. My cellphone is switched OFF in SFO and doesnt get turned on again until I clear US Customs on my return leg!

my emergency backup

I use the cell phone as an emergency backup as you never know when the old car breaks down or a crazy or drunk driver is on the road.

A notebook maybe 5 x 7 with an on-screen keyboard (touchscreen) and a voice input.

and in the same device:
a cell phone,

a walkie talkie,

a pda with a travel version of Office,

a gps,

an xm radio,

a tv

an optional (to accomodate people whose need to use the device where cameras are forbidden) still and movie camera,

a powerful antenna for safety when traveling or hiking in remote areas,

a patch to wear on clothing to keep battery charged,

an uplink to various networks, including home computer, home remote control network for double checking door locks, turning on the oven, setting TiVo, etc.

replace other remote control boxes: car, tv, music, house keys, etc.

for scientists, an optional input for various sensors

Did I forget anything? projector? wire everything except a roll-up screen into the fabric of a jacket?

AM/FM radio with extra batteries
Oct 12, 2005 12:29AM PDT

To find out local traffic, news you still cannot beat local radio stations, unless where you are you have full internet and a local website (usually a TV or radio station) putting that information on their web page. If the power goes out or no internet is available, it becomes news and entertainment. Small speaker systems as well as mini-earphones can add to the usefulness. The speakers and earphones are useful on your other devices as spares if you need them.

NOTHING!!

When I go away on vacation, I drop off the face of the earth! I'm usually on a wilderness camping trip or an RV caravan. I'll take a pay-as-you-go (read disposable) cell phone for emergencies only and that's about it. I really DON'T WANT to be avaliable while I'm away to relax.

For me I take all of the above with me when I am traveling. I would feel lost without them all. I love to be able to take pictures of different things as I am a photo nut. I can not go without my cell phone, I would be lost without the internet as I have lots of mail to read each and everyday. I need to be able to listen to music on the go so take and MP3 with, I am now going to buy an Ipod. I have my digital camcorder that will also be going where ever I go so that I can get even more pics.

Gotta have my Dell Digital Jukebox. I'm a music fanatic and love to listen to my music everywhere I go. The Dell has been perfect. It's a 20Gb, but I still have almost 10Gb left and have 6,926 songs on it. I can put it on shuffle play and not hear the same song in weeks. Plus the battery will last a lot longer than an iPod's.

Cellphone-do not leave home without it.

Cell phones are one of the greatest inventions. Yes, people can use them to the point of beong rude, but blame the people. The cellphones can save lives. I called in for a tow for an elderly lady. Right after her vehicle was towed, a truck left the highway, and overturned in the exact same spot!

Yes I too find it invaluable for being out on the roads summer and winter. In summer I carry it both in the van and also when my wife and I bicycle out in the countryside should we have mechanical problems. If I get stuck in snow a tow truck or help for others is but a call away. It's turned off except when I need to use it when I am stopped.
