What Lens is a good starter lens?

Nov 4, 2005 1:52AM PST

I am thinking of buying a Nikon D70S it comes with a 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G-AFS ED-IF DX Nikkor Lens. I have been reading about what lens are good and bad and now I must say, I am more confused. I want a lens that will work in a hockey rink to take pictures at hockey games, so it needs to be fast and zoom. I have looked at the Sigma APO 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM Lens but the $800 scares me.
Would the Sigma 24-135mm f/2.8-4.5 Aspherical IF for Nikon be good enough to get me started? Could I use this lens for outdoor rodeo events also?
Help, what do you suggest? I really don't want to spend $800 for a lens just to get started.

I really don't want to spend 1700 on just the body. I just want to start this as a hobby.

I just want some advise on what lens would be good to get me started.

Thanks
