What laptop is right for me

by britadeira / June 17, 2008 2:41 AM PDT

I work with 3-d modeling and graphic design so I use programs like Rhinocerous, Sketchup, the Adobe suite, rendering programs,... Since I need a laptop with very good graphics I assume a gaming laptop would be my best bet. Something with a speedy processor and something better than the P.O.S Gateway 7415GX that has proven to me why I shouldn't waste my time or money with Gateway again. If you have any recommendations please throw them at me. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I have..

A similar pair of Compaq R3000 Athlon 64, nvidia 64MB video laptops but these have been stellar performers for the buck (we paid 700 each.) There is an issue with those and it's the NO BATTERY TIME issue but we know why. Also it can scorch your lap.

Take another look at Gateway's Core 2 Duo gamer unit which is in the right price range.

What didn't work for you on your last unit?

Gateway doesn't give the support necessary to keep people coming back to them. I know that they get a lot of attention for gaming, but customer support is a huge issue for me. My current laptop isn't working and I'm at a point where it's better to throw in the towel, buy a new laptop, and worry about it's problems at a later time. I guess I could make a new post about that as well.

That gives such support. Apple is pretty good on support so maybe you need to jump ship?

I use Cad. The only programs I use with mac versions are from adobe. I wish Apple was an option since they are amazing.

For good or bad I'm self supporting. My only support calls are for inwarranty repairs. No company (save one) answers calls on Windows worth noting.

I have a pair of similar laptops like your former Gateway and thought it could be the usual complaints of heat, battery time, etc. We keep the vents, heatsinks clean but the makers have been remiss in telling the owners about yearly maintenance. Most owners treat the laptops as if there was nothing to keep clean, etc.

Archicad which is a similar to Autocad for architects. It was designed for Apple first and then moved to the PC.
