General discussion

What kind of TV is to recommend.

Mar 9, 2006 1:03PM PST

I'm not exactly in the process of buying a new TV but will be in a near future. What is the best choice if the priority is picture quality?

it depends
Mar 9, 2006 3:03PM PST

there are so many kinds out there. in order for us to recommend something, tell us a little about yourself and what you're gonna use it for.

exmple: how are far you sitting, do you have cable or satellite or use an antenna, want to mount it on a wall, what do you wnt to hook up to it, what do you like to watch, how much do you want to spend, what kind of tv do you have now, etc.

possible tv's out there are direct view crt, lcos, lcd rear projection, lcd flatpanel, dlp, plasma, front projection, and a few others. it depends on what you want to do with it.

I am watching a lot of DVDs

And hopefully digital TV (since the TV that we have now doesn't support it...). I am not into a lot of sound effects because I have a very good stereo equippment already, but I do want a perfect picture and a wide screen picture. The distance in one thing now and may be another in a month! Impossible to say what it is going to be. But I doubt it is going to be more than 20 feet ever. I want good contrast and a lasting TV that doesn't need to be replaced in 3 or 4 years.
I watch The Sopranos... LOL!

widescreen tip

many dvd movies are filmed in wider then wide aspect formats. the only way to fit these movies, even on a wide screen tv, is the use of black bars on top and bottom. most hdtvs will come with multiple preset aspect ratio to manipulate the picture size to fit the screen. however, this might stretch or distort the picture unnaturally. a "manual zoom" feature is something you may want to consider when you do your shopping.

Size

Decide your seating distance. A 42" is fine at 8-10 feet, but may be too small at 20 feet. If you decide to sit at 20 feet, you need to talk to Stewart.

I bought this one and it is awesome. Bulb went out early as have most of the new Toshiba bulbs. It was warrantied for a year but next one is out of my pocket. I sell bulbs for these so I can get them at a pretty good price.
