What kind of installations does DSL or Satellite require?

Jun 24, 2008 4:12AM PDT

What kind of installations/hardware does it take to get DSL hooked up to my computer? Anything complicated like digging in the ground? Right now all of our phone lines are analog, do we have to do something to make them digital?
----------------------
Is it possible to actually get Satellite internet from my own home on my desktop? If so, what kind of installations/hardware is required for this? How fast can this kind of service go, relative to DSL?
----------------------
Also, what's the typical costs for these installations and services?

Pretty much any information about either of these 2 types of internet would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

DSL. . .

comes in on your phone line. It's distance limited to about 17,000 feet. Your ISP can fill you in on what is needed and if it'll work. Basically you need for them to set it up, then you need a DSL modem provided by them. I say "Them" because I don't know what's available in your area. On a good day your speed can reach about 768 Kb/s. Cost? Again, your ISP sets the price, but a ballpark is around thirty bucks a month. Ask them about specials with a contract.

Satellite is available but speeds are slower than DSL and bring money. Lots of it. Call any satellite provider for specifics as they are all different.

The highest speed will be cable. I have Roadrunner in the Dallas area and I get 10 Meg down and one meg up. Beats the crap out of DSL and satellite for about 55 bucks a month.

Generally you wouldn't want satellite unless there are no other choices because it's lot more expensive.

As for dsl installation, very simple, no digging involve, hehe. You might have to plug in some line-filters where ever a telephone devices are connected to the phone line. Some isp provides line filter for you and some don't.

You find the company and you check their prices.
