I had exactly the same problem!! with my Canon XHA1
First of all if you are using the on board camera mic there are couple things that can help improve your sound when recording in loud and small places, this is what I did to improve my sound specially in small and loud events<div>1.- Always use manual audio levels
2.- When you open the screen of your camera there is a button that says (mic att) very important that you have it in att it will help the mic to attenuate the loud sound that your onboard camera mic is receiving and able to process it better, in other words it helps the mic to handle the loud music.
3.- Important that you always monitor your audio via over the ear headphones, try record some of the footage and walk away from the scene, rewind and playback what you just recorded and with the help of your headphones you will hear if your sound exactly sound as expected.
</div>4.- I went to B&H and bought my self an audio technica 8022 stereo xlr mic, the good thing about it is that is used to record live events, it can be powered via phantom power from your camera (your camera provide the power to the mic) or batteries it has and onboard attenuator mic, it has connections necessary to have an stereo sound signal which is great for music, and have cables to connect to your camera in both channels the channel 1 and 2 for stereo sound output, and it also have a wind noise reduction cover which helps as well.
5.- When using an external mic make sure you have the xlr mic att on, this controls are right above the xlr mic connection.
6.- under the Menu/audio set up/XLR input on, there is another option says GAIN UP set it to 12db instead of off it will also helps.
