The Downsides of Roxio
Jan 20, 2006 12:49AM PST

While I, perhaps foolishly, continue to use Roxio Easy Media Creator (now using version 8.0), folks should know of two serious downsides to it. First, with each new version, you lose the ability to open projects made in previous versions. I cannot understand why Roxio (now owneed by Sonic) cannot include the ability to open CD music projects created in previous versions - heck even FileMaker Pro databases let you convert previous database to the new format.

Even more serious is that EMC 8 has a serious conflict with some anti-virus programs that can wreck your Windows installation -- and Roxio has not been proactive in alerting users to this (I had to rebuild by C drive twice before I discovered the easily fixed problem). Not long after I finally abandoned Norton AntiVirus in favor of Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, I would always get a "drives busy" message when I tried to play a CD in any player (Windows Media, QuickTime, Real). Slowly but surely other parts of Windows broke down; the Quicken program was destroyed. I had to reinstall everything from scratch (fortunately I keep all data and settings on the D partition). Eventually, I learned that ECM8 does not get along well in Windows XP with some anti-virus programs (Roxio's website, naturally does not name them) and you need to download a utility from Roxio to disable Windows XP's RXFilter. Once that's done, you're golden -- assuming this conflict hasn't already trashed your Windows XP installation.

A genuinely responsible company would proactively alert its registered users to this conflict and name the anti-virus applications with which it has this conflict in Windows XP. (Well, heck a responsible manufacturer would also let new versions of the product open files created in previous versions too). Maybe Sonic will wake up and cure these ills. Then again, maybe they'll find weapsons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Roxio LOL

remeber a few years ago when roxio aquired adaptec all of our cd burners and software were that and they struck an agreement with microsoft and we all had to pay about 100 bucks for a software upgrade on the assurances that there wasn't going to be any problems between roxio and microsoft ever again... suck it roxio

Adobe Audition 1.5
Jan 20, 2006 1:03AM PST

Glad to see Nero is taking over Roxio, when I burned with Roxio I got errors.
Nero was good too and I like it fine but the apps that are with Adobe Audition 1.5 make for a WAY better enviroment.

The record cleaning (lps)work - really.
Removing voice overs (DJ's) from live radio concerts is a snap, and vidio to audio.

It's pricy yes, Nero is about 70 bux, whereas AA1.5 is always $299 (smack)

Roxio Easy Media Creator 8
Jan 20, 2006 2:09AM PST

I have used Roxio since the early days of Easy CD Creator when it was Adaptec. I find it easy to use, intuitive and relatively problem free. I have tried Nero and a few others and just don't think they are as easy to use.

Went from Roxio to Nero
Jan 20, 2006 4:29AM PST

I used Roxio Easy CD Creator v5 (basic application) for about five years on Win 98.
When I upgraded my PC and Installed Win XP Pro,the progarm needed either upgrading (expensive) or installing a patch with specific directions (looked complicated).

As the program had caused me some inconvenience and technical support was no longer available for old versions,I thought it would be better to give Nero a try.It didn't let me down, works fine,is reliable and easy to use.
Anyway,I still miss Roxio's ''drag and drop/copy and paste'' feature which makes the recording process ''a piece of cake''.

Hmm, Roxio or Nero...
Jan 20, 2006 4:55AM PST

I've used both Roxio and Nero, both are excellent and have many easy-to-use features. I'd give a slight edge to Roxio, it has excellent video and slideshow composing features and a huge selection of dissolves.

I've also use Windows Media Player - simple, but very limited.

Will Roxio create DVD from mpeg on Win XP 64?
Mar 4, 2006 8:03AM PST

I edited and saved, as mpeg, many videos with Pinnacle Studio9. Now I discover that Studio9 can not make a dvd because of my 64 bit platform.

So I searched and found that Roxio 8 WILL work with 64 bit bus.

Before I buy it, I want to be certain.

If I begin with an mpeg (that was created with Pinnacle)will it move to a DVD at the touch of a button or two?

My paranoid side predicts:
1) MPEG made with product other than Roxio
will not be compatible with this feature.

2) The mpeg was prepared at wrong speed and
will not be transferred onto the DVD

3) Preparation settings at time video captured
were incongruant with requirements of Roxio

If not Roxio, then who?

CDBurnerXpPro3 Thank you!
Jan 20, 2006 6:53AM PST

I had to read every post to find anyone mentioning a great FREE burner.

I've used NTI, and Roxio, and settled for Nero. I use Nero with my DVD copy programs for the most part.

But if I want to burn backups, TV (Mpeg2), or basically anything else, I fire up CDBurnerXpPro3. It loads fast, and is very easy to use. I prefer it for burning ISO images too.

My favorite burner app' is Nero....absolutely.
Jan 20, 2006 3:56PM PST

After picking up an early model Plextor when they were
getting lots of attention, I was very happy with the
unit, but it came bundled with Adaptec when they had just changed to Roxio. Aside from all the trouble I had with customer support at Roxio, the layout of the
software convinced me that it had been designed and not
tested. DUMB software. So my buddy who spent 60 bucks
on a cheap burner had software that killed. It was so
simple and user friendly, which usually doesn't mean much to me, but this was different. It was logical and
sounded great. End of Story-Chimera70

Nero is a very complete CD/DVD burning app
Jan 20, 2006 5:33PM PST

For Windows, I have to go with Nero. However, I haven't used Windows in about a month as I have migrated to Linspire. I find that K3b, the CD/DVD burning app that comes with most Linux distros, is about on-par on Linux as Nero is on Windows. However, the Windows version of Nero (the Linux version of Nero is basically stripped down to one app - Nero Burning Rom) also comes with other apps, and of those "other" apps, my fave is Nero Wave Editor. I love the karaoke filter on there...especially with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. With Wave Editor, I can use the karaoke filter to zone in on some of the vocal layers (for example, I can listen to Freddie, Brian, and Roger singing the intro as tenors, and then in the operatic part in the middle, I can hear them sing in a falsetto-soprano style).

DVD CD BURNING
Jan 20, 2006 11:46PM PST

No doubt, NERO does it all, and I have tried many.
However, I would like to ask a question on all DVD CD burners.

I have some music files in WAVE format, which will not fit on a CD. How do you record them in a DVD. Can this be done.

Thx for help.

ROXIO Cause it is easy to use
Jan 21, 2006 10:19AM PST

Tried Nero and the only thing I can say is that it must have been created by the Germans cause like most of their software it had the most confusing user interface someone could create. Switch to ROXIO and things have been smooth saling ever since. So I stick with a tool that works.

My favorite burning software
Jan 21, 2006 12:30PM PST

Well, personally I use K3b (I think it's called that). I am a Linux user, at home, and have found K3b to be a fine piece of software.

Please don't send me, or post anything about Windows being better than Linux, because personally I think both have their good points and their bad points, and that is not the point of this particular posting.

Thanks,
Max

Other DVD software
Jan 22, 2006 7:04AM PST

Mac OSX includes DVD-burning software (iDVD) plus iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto and so on. They are all designed by Apple, the same company that designs the hardware. So conflicts with third-party stuff don't occur. And if you have the OS, you have all the multimedia gear as well.
Roxio Toast is pretty good, but I prefer the "native" software suite.

Mac DVD software
Jan 22, 2006 2:38PM PST

Mad Auntie Bron, Never knew that with OSX. I am using OSX10.4.4 and use Roxio ToastTitanium V6. How good is the Mac software for burning DVDs compared to Roxio software?
What is the procedure to use iDVD? How do you access it?
I have a Lacie d2 dvd/wr unit.
If that is the case, why upgrade to Roxio Toast V7?
Please change your name to WILD Auntie Bron!
Wild to me. Good info.
And, waiting to hear back from you.
Thanks,

Notice how everyone just keeps discussing their PC formats/software and platforms. Wonder what will come about with the new Mac/Intel. Wonder what what the burning issue will be about at that time?
