A place for my coffee cup.

That's a nice place for my coffee cup, but no one can tell you why. The forum names evolved from mergers of Cnet, ZDnet, MSN and even as far back as GEnie.

You may ask questions and more in any forum, but do try to stick with a topic that seems to match the forum name.

Hmmm.
Desktop vs laptop?

I suppose you could take your laptop and put it on a desk and then it would be a desktop???

I've often thought that cnet has too many overlapping forums which can sometimes make it difficult to determine where to put a post.

Perhaps that's why some folks post the same question in multiple forums. (shotgun approach)

What was niether a desktop or laptop way back when?

Mainframe may have been the accepted term. It was quite an advance when computers dropped to the size you could pick one up yourself.

True Tales from the Techs: http://www.techtales.com/techroom.html
Customer: "I was wondering if this computer had a fan belt or something in it."
Me: "Sorry, a fan belt?"
Customer: "Yeah, it's getting slower each time I start it in the morning,
and I wondered if there was a fan belt or drive shaft that might be slipping."

What do people mean when they say, "The computer went down on me"?

My true story.

I noticed one customer was always buying more and more diskettes. After they hit a thousand I offered them a bulk package... But imagine what I found out...

"You can erase these and use them again?"

Nobody told them how floppy disks worked...
