There is two numbers you need to consider: how wide a lens goes, and how long. The magnification number is less important. As an example, both the Canon SD4500 IS and the Samsung HZ35W have a longest focal length of 360mm, but the 10x Canon start at 36mm, whereas the 15x Samsung starts at a much wider 24mm.

I current have a Canon 800 with image stabilizer with a low optical zoom. It has a digital zoom but I have found it shoots with very poor quality.
I need a small camera that I can carry in my pocket. I live on the lake and a lot of shots I have require a much better zoom.
