For the non-tech folk that want to make a web page.

In reply to: What is the Best Web Design tool for a website

This is not a question of best but what you can deal with to create a web page.

-> For everyday non-tech users I suggest they go with Facebook. Make a page for your hockey club and let Facebook hold the information. No learning new tech or tools and no fees to pay.

Like said, I am not a tech savy and at point I may even have to assign website modification tasks to other people from our club. So something easy to use kind of tool, while still having capabilities to create nice website, is what I am looking for.

"You see, next to a well-designed team website, a team Facebook page is another great communication tool to get more exposure, find fans, supporters and keep the ones you have up to date.

A Facebook page allows you to share training photos, game results, victory celebrations and other news while giving your followers the chance to interact with you directly."

There are hundreds of hosting sites for your WordPress site. Pick over https://www.google.com/search?q=where+to+host+my+wordpress+site

For some, they fall into Analysis Paralysis trying to find the best deal or host. As to support I have bad news. Today, good support costs money. I find a lot of bad reviews over support issues. The hosts usually never fix your broken web pages.

First with the board and group of club members discuss what the contents of the site would be and who will be responsible for maintaining it. That could vary from 3 static pages to be filled by the PR-person and a calender page maintained by the secretary to a site where each team has a blog-like page with the team leader writing a story about each match of the team including pictures. Just look at the sites of other hockey clubs to see what they have and what would be feasible for your club.

Then find a volunteer member to set it up and instruct the future editor(s) on how to keep it current. That volunteer member should have experience in a tool that's suitable for the intended uses of the site. Something like Wordpress or Wix might be useful,

Website

In reply to: Re: site

We already have a Facebook page. But I think a website is a must to look credible. Facebook is good for internal uses whereas a website is for external communication, marketing etc.
The site will mainly have static pages like history, calendar, results, teams, players, contact us etc.
So which tool is the best and the easiest? It will need to support two languages, English and French.

Three remarks:
1. The best is not necessarily the easiest, and the easiest is not necessarily the best. These might very well be conflicting requirements.
2. Calendars and results aren't static. In fact, they change a lot so they are dynamic. It's a design decision if you go for a lot of editing (either in simple html or with a CMS) or for a database linked solution.
3. With 2 languages, you'll have to write a lot of info in 2 languages yourself. That's always possible, so always supported, although there might be different ways to do it. See how other bilangual sites do it in your country.

How simple?

I've used Thunderbird email to create webpages before. You create the message just like you want your webpage to look and then save to an html file. You then upload it to your server account.

Is an example I did in 2013, although the image link has since gone missing. It was to showcase how easy a simple webpage could be done in email program.

In reply to: How simple?

Hi Kees_B, I know what you mean. Let's say I am looking for a good mix of best and simple.
I checked online for some reviews and found out that Wix and WordPress are among the best. From the little experience I had with Wix last year, I found their customer service terrible. So I might give WordPress a try unless you guys think that there is some other site builder that is better.
For the moment, calendars and results can be static for the most recent season. We might save a database on the computer with past results and other data.

A recurring complaint about web hosters

In reply to: For the moment

Is support. Support rarely includes fixing your site or teaching web creation.

This means a lot of first time web makers other have a bad experience with support.

Can you share what the issue you had with Wix so others can read about it?
