To be honest with you.

You have worn the subject out. Make a decision!!

There is NO best company. You started out denigrating Gateway laptops and seemed to think that the similar mfrs were equally bad, yet you expect someone to pick one for you.

I see writeups that put IBM and Toshiba high, but there are thousands of people totally happy with virtually any of the other brands.

If I were buying one I would buy one with the longest warranty. Notebooks are a real PITA to get replacement parts for, and if, by the luck of the draw, you lose the LCD screen after warranty is over, you buy a new laptop.

In many cases your concept of cheap parts is the fact that the large mfrs buy such large quantities that they can get good quality at low prices. If they turn out to be crap the mfr doesn't buy from that supplier any longer.

Look for the D----d features that you like at the price you like and get it!!!!

This is a nasty question only because it awakes what people *may* like of a notebook, so pick your features and take it from there. So, if you want a plain old notebook, check into IBM offering. Dell and HP/Compaq provide decent offering too, but IMHO pale to IBM. Pricing is more for IBM, once you get away from bottom-end offering then they seem to be even. Toshiba notebooks are good as well. Warranty and any after sale needs should be carefully viewed before the sale. Another reason I like IBM. SO check each website for sale details and see what suits ya. I wouldn't discount any offering from Sager, WinBook, Acer, and others, if you look closely they're almost the same, but whatever notebook you buy, buy what you need it for not for just on features or price, anything after the sale is costly or costier.

good luck -----Willy Happy
