What is the best File Compression software?

Jan 22, 2011 9:10AM PST

Well, PeaZip is installed on this computer already, but I was wondering what File Compression software you guys recommend? I usually am only opening the files, so I am mainly interested in the one that is the fastest.

Which is the fastest free one, paid one?

Thanks

What criteria?

While I am currently using 7zip, your criteria is a bit short. Speed depends on settings. And I rarely find all of these use the same defaults.

That's an interesting question. If no answer comes, try the experimental way.

Find as many freeware and trial versions of shareware as you can. Install all. Define what compressions (zip, rar, etc) are important for you.
Then start benchmarking.

Please post the results of your research for others.

7zip

You would have to say 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org) is probably the least bloated of all the zip programs out there and therefore the fastest to load and open archive files. Very light, small and free!. Personally I use Bitser (http://www.bitser.org)
