What is the best brand of laptop for a new shopper?

Mar 2, 2009 8:58AM PST

I am thinking of buying a new laptop at a relatively low price for my studies. I want to be able to use a range of programs including music and photo modification, word processing etc but am unsure what the best brand would be. Does anyone have any pointers?

Max $1600?

I really have no idea as to what that kind of money would be sufficient for. I've never really had the need for an upgrade before but the programs at my place of learning aren't compatible with my computer at home. So I need to find a good laptop but have no clue where to start..
