What is S.M.A.R.T. capability with respect to a HDD, and should it be enabled or disabled with WIN98SE?

Here is what my mobo manual says.
"This feature is normally disabled because system resources used in this option may decrease system performance"

As a home user who makes regular back-ups I do not use the feature.

If I was running a server or was a business user I might have to re-think that.
