What is "RUpdate.log"?

May 15, 2004 1:14AM PDT

An icon suddenly appeared on my desktop titled "RUpdate log". Is this something I inadvertently requested?

D.C.,

It's the McAfee update log which is created by the Instant Updater program. Occasionally, I've seen some glitches where the file is placed wherever a RIGHT click scan is done. Which version of Virus Scan, scan engine and virus defintions are you running?? (RIGHT click on the McAfee shield, or red "M" in the lower right corner, choose "About Virus Scan" and please post back with the version, scan engine version and virus defintion version,)

The log can be created when running Instant Updater. It shouldn't be on your desktop, but instead should be placed in the McAfee folders such as "C:\program files\mcafee\mcafee shared components\instant updater". The file can safely be deleted.

Hope this helps.

D.C., So... When Is This Happening?
May 15, 2004 11:38AM PDT

After you delete the file, does it come back when you do a right click scan on your desktop? If you're using the Instant Updater, does is appear after an update?

Have you been having any other problems? Have you tried setting the Instant Updater to "Manual", then only running manual updates? Does the "rupdate.log" appear then?

Just some suggestions.

"After you delete the file, does it come back when you do a right click scan on your desktop?"
No it does not come back.

"If you're using the Instant Updater, does is appear after an update?"
I don't even know how to use the Instant Updater. I update manualy at least weekly. I do not run my PC 24/7 so all "housekeeping" chores are done weekly.

"Have you been having any other problems?"
No. Everything is running smoothly. rupdate.log
icon no longer appears since I deleted it.

Thanks for the help. When that icon suddenly appeared my first reaction was "virus!". I got burned once so I am gun-shy to say the least.
