General discussion

what is "NPID3.exe?" It's trying to gain access to my PC.

Jan 19, 2008 10:31AM PST

Hello, I was using my computer tonight, and the UAC warning screen came up, with it asking about a program, called "NPID3.exe"
I have never seen or heard of this program before, and the only other reference I see on google is someone asking how to turn UAC off.

As I have never seen this program before, it makes me wary, and I click deny. But it keeps coming up every few minutes ...

What is it, and what should I do about it?

okay, so it's the now playing sidebar gadget ...
as after each song changes, it pops up. additionally, when I click details, it shows the path to the program, which leads to program files -> sidebar -> nowplaying gadget

however, I've had this gadget for a long time now, and it just started asking for permission tonight.

I'll disable the gadget for now, but any clue why it's just now acting up?

It's UAC Working As Designed...
Jan 20, 2008 4:02AM PST

There may have been a Windows Update which has caused "Now Playing" to open with slightly different permissions or maybe UAC is now identifying more strictly but personally, I disable UAC on all the Vista machines I work on. It serves no worthwhile purpose on our machines.. It's your choice to leave UAC enabled so it warns you of every little thing or you disable all those little things from running.

Hope this helps.
