What is needed to access wireless hot spots

I have just purchased an inexpensive E Machines laptop (model E525-2200 ) with Windows 7 Home Premium.

I am climbing the learning curve with Win 7 and wonder what I need to do to access and use wireless hot spots at motels, hotels, restaurants, bookstores etc. Not sure if my laptop is wireless ready or if I need to purchase an adapter.

Any guidance/suggestions would be appreciated.
