what is meant by metering capabilities?

i'm actually looking for a dslr and was told not to pay much attention with pixels,what's important is the metering capabilities....

You don't need to worry about pixels, but

I don't get why metering would be a big deal. I'm probably guessing to choose a camera that has spot metering, but that's even rarely used.

If you have never had it, you might not miss it, but in some situations it is just indispensable. Spot lit stage shows, backlighted subjects, contrasty situations, very dark or very light backgrounds can fool the meter and require bracketing or post processing to get the desired shot. With spot metering, you get it right most of the time on the first shot. Personally, I would eliminate any camera without it.
