Question

What is happening?

May 8, 2018 10:37AM PDT

I get thru a hotspot device connection to the internet. I found that the TV wifi won't connect, yet the blu-ray player will(wifi capable). The player seems more robust to connect while the TV just too easily doesn't. The hotspot is practically on top of both devices, so I don't see why such a fuss. I can't seem to locate what to correct if anything. Its more of an annoyance for now. I like to think maybe the recent TV updates maybe a root issue. Any hints?

Answer
I found Samsung's servers often

Can't be reached with your ISP or cellular carrier's choice of DNS. To work around this, I set the DNS in the TV to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 or 4.2.2.1.

As to TV updates, I run into Microsoft quality updates and find myself hitting the web page for the TV model to get the alternative update method. Sometimes I find the TV's web page to have older firmware than the set I unpacked. It's a mess out there. Wear your galoshes.

Will check

I should have mentioned, I got the LG tv and does connect now and then, but drops too easily. Yet as I stated if I switch to BR player connection it works more often. Yeah, that too can drop. I figure the hotspot isn't that good because I live in a rural area. I have to enter the password to get online, but I see where your DNS comes in. I guess that's a more universal DNS for such service? Right now, I'm using the hotspot for internet online. Thanks Robert.

Dump the hotspot and...

...use your Smart TV with a more reliable internet connection and the problem will disappear. Sorry.

Free is free

I get the hotspot from the local library and its free. I use it and generally it does well other than what I explained. No way can I improve this other than buying some IPS service. Alas, the IPS around here are spotty too. However, all I want is internet and that gets expensive, so I'm happy to get what I do and live with free air service for TV, etc.. Thanks -----Willy

The only two hotspots I see in use by consumers

Are the cellular hotspot and the "wireless internet for homes" systems. If you are using someone's library hotspot then they likely filter the Internet. You'll have to take your problems back to their IT now.

Sorry but I would not have guessed you were not using your own Internet solution.

It's a stretch for some cellular systems.

While I know to change the DNS -> IN THE TV <- I won't be able to explain why you are having issues except they are common and shows that most of the time, this is where carriers will have to improve services to handle video streaming.
