Keep watching as product cycles drop to new lows.

I'm hearing "single run" versions. That is, they make a "run" then redesign, "run" and repeat. The days of having the same model for a year appear to be over.

Thanks for the feedback but I do not understand why there are no 2140s available. I even tried to call a representative and she told me the '5101' is coming out this week but that seemed like a brush off. This is not a good transition from product to product. What gives?

Is going to be abrupt and rude according to some. The new way is to make a batch, sell them off while designing and making the next version.

I can see where the new ways can rattle people who were used to models sticking around for a few years.

Robert may have a point of new systems coming out. Laptops no longer command a premium price as they did just a 1-2 yrs. ago. Though you can option popular models even they get phased out. Effectively, most computer system models reflect a level of prowess as it in itself is the option. If you want anything better you have to step-up a model or two get better installed(options?) as the basis of that model#. Laptops are far more difficult to re-option anyways, its best this way. Plus, if for any reason there is a problem model#, being dropped sooner than later its out of the loop from the manufacturer. In many ways you consider this a "new and improved" laptop being offered roughly every business quarter. Consider how wi-fi was the special option to have, now practically all new laptops have it as std..

why directly from HP
Jun 22, 2009 1:06AM PDT

I wanted a model that had certain specifications under a education discount offered directly from HP. I only qualified for the discount if I purchased from HP only. For example, one feature I wanted was the high definition display at the discounted rate. Anyhow, NONE of the models are show as available on the site.

This may be a new or evolving business practice, which is their right, but they could alienate potential buyers with ready cash on hand to purchase what is perceived to be the latest and greatest. Way to go!

I seriously thought I was being misled, Kudos for finding this link. I checked it out. I need this for school and I am ready to get one. I hope this is not too expensive but I need one and I figured this is the king of the mountain right now.

Sad thing about the 2140 being discontinued so quickly is the fact it was just picked as an "Editor's Choice" at one of the major laptop review sites in May of this year.

Can't even mull over a decision to buy for a short time before your considered choices are gone.

At least in the "old days" you could wait for various models to build up a track record of dependability for a few months before picking one. Now it seems like a roll of the dice in that respect.

not particularly good for HD so no great loss with HD screen disappearing in new models. Even the X4500 for 14" HD is barely adequate, let alone attractive. Stick with std def in netbooks.
