General discussion

what is best freeware FTP client for windows xp?

Jan 13, 2005 9:29PM PST

There are few good freeware FTP clients for windows: SmartFTP, Filezilla, Ace FTP. What from them is best, i.e. more lightweight, more clean, write less registry entries into user system, install less files?

Smart FTP
Jan 15, 2005 12:14AM PST

I've been using Smart FTP, Cute FTP... etc. but I found Smart FTP to be the best. It's fast, logging into domains is very easy... the program is organized.. "clean" as you would say. I prefer it above all... just try it.

The command line FTP rules. Very clean, doesn't require registry entries and is about 41 kilobytes in size.

FileZilla

I use it, works nice. It can operate in 'safe mode' and make it a blank slate everytime it starts. no REG entries

did you come up with a favorite yet? I'm researching the same question. Looking for a small, free, easy to use ftp client, that doesn't install spyware onto my system.

I have a new Dell Dimension 3000 with WinXP. Usually I ftp my 38K database at the end of the work day. It takes about 35 minutes.

1. I think it is a problem is that it doesn't close after the file is transferred. Is this correct?

2. Can it hurt the computer to leave it in this condition until I come in the next morning?

3. At the end of the transfer, it says "10 seconds remaining" for WAY more than 10 seconds. Why does it do this and when is it safe to close it?

4. Will ftp clients close the connection after tranferring files?

5. In your reply you said SCRIPTABLE. What does that mean?

Thank you.

Something is mighty wrong here. Even on dialup that's 20 seconds tops.

1. I don't know. Not enough info.
2. Shouldn't hurt.
3. Estimates of time remaining still are just that. 'Estimates'
4. Not usually. The command line FTP certainly doesn't.
5. Try http://windows.about.com/od/tipsarchive/l/bltip418.htm
