Question

What is a good antivirus that doesn't run in the background?

I use my laptop for live performance and am looking for a anti-virus that doesn't run in the background and use system resources. I would like to configure it so I can manually run system scans.

I only access the internet on this laptop very infrequently but it does connect to public wifi.

Is there such an option?

Well

I'm thinking I could do that with Avast.

Turn off ALL the real time scanners and the auto update feature and it's pretty much dead.

Update the defs when I want and run a manual scan.

Almost all products can do that, HOWEVER.

It means that there is no real time protection and average folk would catch something too easily.

The last on demand ONLY scanner I know of is ClamAV (see google) but my thought here is "this is a bad idea."
