Can anyone explain the difference between a gif and a jpg file,

different specifications than jpeg (which is really a compression specification rather than a file format).

Differences are that gifs are Indexed Color which limits the amount of colors to 256 as opposed to jpgs which can have many more colors and can be RGB, CMYK, Grayscale or LAB color. Jpeg also may contain vector paths.

Gif supports transparency which jpg does not. Gifs can also be animated. Because of the limited amount of colors gifs are good for simple artwork but not so good for photographs or ar5t with subtle gradations.
