Question

What intranet solution is best for my company?

May 3, 2011 4:39AM PDT

I've been asked to find the ideal intranet solution for our company of about 150 people. I'm not all that familiar with intranets and what kind there are. I've done quite a bit of research, but it's really hard to gauge exactly what different products offer just by looking at their product pages. Ideally, I'd love to come back with a few different options with pricing.

Our target product would have the following features:
- Relatively easy setup. We do have a tech person, but I would love to set this up without him.
- Cost between $100 - $200 /month.
- Allow employees to browse about 10 - 20 calendars
- Allow a place to store and retrieve company files
- Have security with permission levels for users

These are things that would be awesome to have, but not 100% neccesary:
- Customization. Allow us to put our logo up and choose colors
- Allow us to have an easily updatable splash page (or custom page) where we could put a new picture/video up every day with a message.

Amazing if it could include, but not a priority right now.
- Room for growth.
- Personal user profile tracking (i.e. a user could see how many vacation days he/she has accrued or see their insurance information)

I've looked at things like Basecamp and open source solutions like OpenAtrium and they both seem like viable options. However, Basecamp doesn't seem like you can customize things that much and OpenAtrium may be too complex to set up. Basecamp is great because you don't have to host anything yourself, but maybe OpenAtrium is super easy to install.Anybody who has thoughts would make my day.

Thanks!
