What if I have an ISP (Comcast) that doesn't support Linux..

...and I want to get online with it? Is there a workaround, or would I have to find a Linux-friendly ISP?

Having an ISP which does not SUPPORT Linux only means that they do not give you (support) information about using Linux. You can still use Linux with them but if you run into a Linux problem they are not going to help (support) you.

If you are confident with Linux there is no reason why you should not stick with Comcast.

Google is your friend. Check out: linux comcast

It's not the ISP...but the hardware that matter.

So give it a try.

What kind of support for Linux would you need?

And why does it matter?

I thought, Kees,...

...that if an ISP doesn't support Linux, then there would be no way to use a Linux install with that ISP. I stand corrected on that issue.

different, it doesn't have any direct interaction with your isp. All it'll do is place an ip address request and if it's granted you can surf. Linux looks really similar to a windows computer when it wants to connect to the internet.

I've been with a couple isp's and they've never told me that i only had to use windows computers. I've got windows and linux computers in my mini-network and i haven't had any problems.

The issue might lie in that your isp won't know how to properly diagnose a connectivity issue if it crops up on a linux computer.

Linux and Comcast

I have a number of computers all networked through the Linksys router both wireless and wired, all with different versions of Linux (this post is with PCLinux2007, Firefox and Comcast). I even pay and print account statements of my Comcast bill on line. I don't use their web page features very often but they seem to work just fine.... Post the specific feature your want to access and I'll try it for ya.

P.S. Linux provides a faster connection then the "DOS" based operating system.

what sort of problem are you having?

I have Comcast and I have a Linux computer connected. I have used 3 or 4 versions of Linux (currently playing with Mandriva 2009) and I have been able to connect online with all of them. I am unable to get the Linux computer connected wirelessly, but that is not an ISP problem. That is a configuration or hardware problem within my Linux computer. I connect with an ethernet connection through the router with no problem.
