What HDTV to buy?

Aug 7, 2005 12:44PM PDT

I've been looking at a few TVs for my new purchase and at the moment i have narrowed it down to 2, i would like to get peoples opinions on which one is better overall purchase. Please just compare, no saying the tv isnt good. Thanks alot in advance.

Sony 46 Rear Projection- I dont know how to post links but its on sale at circuit city for 1000.00.

VS

Samsung 47 rear projection- Its on samsclub under 36+ for about 1000.

They both seem very good indeed. I can confirm the 47 has built in tuner but im not postive about the Sony!

Please HELP!

The Sam's club links didn't give much info so here is the link from Samsung.
OK both are rear projection CRT TVs.
The Sony is only a HDTV monitor, NO HD tuner.
The Sony is a foor unit the Samung a table unit.
Refering to my earler post, the Samusung does HAVE a HDTV tuner in it.
If you haven't read C-net's guide to TVs I have posted the link.
I'm kinda looking also since my 14 year old 32" is starting to have a problem. John

Response to Samsung or Sony
Aug 8, 2005 3:15AM PDT

Hello, I recently purchased a Panasonic 47'' HDTV Monitor rear projection model # PT47X54. Prior to purchasing this TV, I was strongly considering the Samsung HCR4755W from SamsClub and the Sony 46'' from a local electronic store which sells them below $1,000. I made tons of research including from Consumer Reports and asked a lot of questions at the stores before deciding. The Samsung does have a HD tuner which the Sony does not but the picture quality of the Samsung cannot be compared to the Sony or the Panasonic. The Samsung does not have a bright picture display and does not have a screen protector. Usually the low cost big screens (example: Magnavox) will not include them. I also noticed that the Samsung has a very limited viewing angle. You almost have to be in direct center to have a clear view. Consumer reports rated the Sony and Panasonic as ''best buys'' for their class. The reason why I decided to get the Panasonic over the Sony is due to online reviews which were a bit better than the Sony and image quality at the stores. The Panasonic has a brighter, clearer picture than the Sony plus one additional inch in size. The Panasonic has a lot of connections, awesome sound quality and I personally think the Panasonic has a much cleaner and nicer look than the Sony. The drawback to both the Sony and Panasonic is the size. They both have a large cabinet which make them stick out a lot from a wall. The Samsung has a really nice size for a projection TV, almost like a DLP TV however if you want to get the best picture quality especially in HDTV and features, I would suggest you check out the Sony or Panasonic instead.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I was just wondering what tabletop meant? Also if it has a built in tuner does that mean i dont need a hd reciever for direct tv?

tabletop?

Tabletop means that it has to put on a table to get it to the correct viewing hight.
The other ones are big enough to sit on the foor to be at the correct hight.
Built in Over The Air HD tuner means it can recive standard broadcast HD channels like ABC,NBC,CBS etc.
You will still need a satilite reciver for satilite. John
