What happens when Microsoft breaks Sony's DRM under DMCA

Nov 14, 2005 10:55AM PST

This might be a lawyer issue, but is it a violation of the DMCA if Microsoft automatically removes DRM because it is considered a threat to their operating system. This is mostly a hypotheical, because under the current issue, Sony has release info to spyware and virus protection companies. But if Microsoft thought that Sony was breaking their OS and they issued patches to remove the DRM would it be a violation of the DMCA? Also if it is legal, would it be legal for me to remove DRM on my own if it were a threat to my OS or computer in general.
