MSCONFIG is supplied with XP and works pretty much the same as before with small changes to match the new OS. Some programs will reinstate themselves if you uncheck them with MSCONFIG and this may infuriate some. Not much you can do about badly behaving programs like that. I choose to uninstall such and not use them.
Other people will use other programs like STARTER which I noted in the Anti-Parasite Suite post at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0
Still others will have to learn about this new OS and what SERVICES are.

I have a Compaq-D530 running Windows XP. A lot of programs "pre-load" at starup and place an icon into the icon bar or notification area as Windows XP call it. In all the previous versions of Windows I would run MSCONFIG to uncheck these programs and regain available resources. The program I loaded was yahoo messenger and I close it every time after my power up my computer, but I'd like to remove it from my startup. I've searched all the start menus to no avail. Also, on a seperate occasion I lost the volume icon in the icon bar or notification area which I want back.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
