Go for Rebel XT

Rebel XT seems to be the right one for the $1,000 budget. Otherwise, Canon 20D is a better choice to spend over $1,500. These 2 camera are eqipped with Canon Digic II processor and new CMOS sensors. The quality of picture shooting by both cameras is outstanding. I'd say much lower noise than Nikon D70. Any way, test them yourselves under the dimmer light condition. Good luck.

I just purchased my Pentax *ist from our local camera store. They have a special going on all over where you get the body and 2 lens's including telephoto for $899. Im super happy with mine. Takes standard or rechargeble double a's. Pictures are incredible. Definately five stars in my book.

Any DSLR camera has more features for you to play with.

More than just manual or automatic. You can adjust shutter speed, iso, aperture, drive, interchangable lenses, external flashes, and so on. It's quite similar to the film camera.

Recently many DSLR camera has lowered the body weights, size, and lense accessories. For instance, Canon 20D and the Rebel XT comparing to previous larger and heavier Canon 10D and Rebel. To me, size and weight does a small matter, but the picture quality. Try and test for what you really need and suit your requirements. Good luck.
