What does it mean when Device Manager is empty?

I've not yet seen the PC in question, but that's what a co-worker claims is going on with his machine. He's trying to find out why he has no sound on a WinXP box.

I've never seen this, so I haven't a clue. He states that the PC runs normally except for the lack of sound...

Registry cleaners that can cause this. Remember there is no single cause or cure so start with google.com and type in "XP DEVICE MANAGER IS EMPTY".
