What do you mostly use your cell phone for?

May 23, 2006 7:02AM PDT

Aside from making and receiving calls, what do you mostly use your cell phone for?

Taking photos (how useful is it?)
Playing games (are you happy with the gameplay?)
Listening to music (how useful is it?)
Internet browsing (how useful is it?)
Text messaging (how useful is it?)
Keeping track of calendar events (how useful is it?)
Other
Nothing else! It's a phone!

I love my phone, BUT. .
May 23, 2006 12:37PM PDT

Why does no one work on making a standard battery that lasts more than 3-4 days (standby)?? I resent that the phone manufacturers force us to purchase expensive extended-life batteries, rather than offer them as standard equipment. I hate having to recharge my phone so often! Other than that, I have no other complaints.

Phone and Alarm
May 23, 2006 12:42PM PDT

I use mine as my business phone, and I use the alarm to wake up by. That is it.

I hate that the carriers and manufacturers practically force all the bells and wistles on you. Twenty different camera phones, but 1 or 2 basic ones at best. I already have two digital cameras that take the 5 year old 2 megapixel one takes 10 times better pics than the pics friends have posted online...friends with the high end ones. So why would I need a camera phone. They should make better quality ones that are durable, better sound quality and better battery life.

when I want the bells and wistles, I'll tote around my laptop

make and receive calls

I do have all the extra's on my cell, but I use mine to make and receive phone calls. Nice and simple, the way it was meant to be.

Other uses
May 23, 2006 1:43PM PDT

I use my cell phone to read books (eReader & Mobipocket), watch movies (Windows Media Player, Pocket TV & Beta Player), transport shopping lists (I can convert EXCEL and WORD to a mobile format), play some games, and I use OUTLOOK. So, my cell phone is essentially a mini laptop. I do some text messaging. I have a mobile phone keyboard for heavy typing. It doesn't have a camera. I have a digital camera for that. I do love that it has memory cards. 1Gb will hold a 2 hour movie, a book, lots of music. It's great for those "waiting" times.

I can make calls?
May 23, 2006 1:48PM PDT

I do make some calls with my phone, but I don't really call many people, so my phone is basically an alarm clock/reminder device. But I do like the EZ tip calc for the times I do go out to eat.

Recording laughter
May 23, 2006 1:55PM PDT

When his aunt let out an immense scream of laughter at a party, my nephew recorded the sound on his cellphone. He's played it back to us 2 or 3 times a year for the last 3 years.

What cell phone?

What cell phone? I don't have anything to say to anybody that's that important.

You didn't list my option!
May 23, 2006 2:11PM PDT

I use my cellphone for *NOTHING*-- because I don't own one. I despise them, and won't have one in my house. I regard them as one of the three worst inventions in all of human history, after the "focus group" and before the "Diebold Voting Machine."

Huh?
May 25, 2006 10:10AM PDT

Why? If they weren't useful people wouldn't bother with them. I have several elderly relatives who get really sniffy about mobile phones and I tend to think they're just technophobes. Imagine saying "I utterly despise hammers. I'd never use one." So carry on using the heel of your shoe, but the right tool in the right situation is not something to be sniffed at! Why should something be despised just because there is an electronic circuit board inside it? If it's useful, use one! It isn't immoral as far as I can see.
If the annoyance is seeing other people using them, what's the problem there? If the person they're communicating with were there in person you'd hear both halves of their conversation - if people talking to one another is so annoying you should be really pleased only to have to endure one half of the dialogue!
OK, I'll admit I was once annoyed by someone who got a mobile out in a doctor's waiting room and started pacing up and down the middle of the room, yelling into his phone, but I can honestly say that's the only time I've been annoyed by someone's mobile. That sort of thing doesn't happen often, does it?

It's just a phone
May 23, 2006 3:31PM PDT

I got my newest phone (Motorola v220) on a promotion only because I had finally broken my old phone. I thought the camera feature would be neat, but the quality of the photos is so poor I rarely use it. Then a friend showed me how much better the quality of the photos from his Raz'r phone are, which made me give up the on the photo feature altogether, except for the wallpaper and screensaver, which are, of course, pictures of my dog!
I also HATE the internet capability! Several times I have accidentally hit the wrong menu button and found the screen transmitting "data", which of course then shows up on my bill! I may be old-fashioned, but if I want to go online, I'd rather use my laptop than my phone!

Cell Phone Slideshow
May 23, 2006 3:46PM PDT

I love being able to take out my cell phone and show pictures of my grandson anytime anyone even remotely looks like they are interested. I have uploaded a number of pictures to my RAZR and use the slideshow any time I get a chance.

Text messaging and alarm
May 23, 2006 5:04PM PDT

the alarm rocks on cell fones...they vibrate and u can put a cool tune....but the best thing ever abt a cell fone is TEXTING!! i often wish i cud have a cell fone thts text messaging only....i wudnt need to ever call people....just send txt msgs! i lov email and txt msgs are email on the go!

This must be an US-angled poll

Just 18% for text messaging...? That's odd, because f.ex. in many countries in Europe text messaging is more popular than actual phone calls.

- Collapse -
Are the manufacturers checking this poll
May 23, 2006 8:19PM PDT

I certainly hope so. It would be nice to have a phone that really works good as a phone. But, I suspect that the manufacturers are catering to the carriers and not the needs of the user.

The technology is there . . . why not use it?

As it stands now, cell phones really suck.

Lots of unused features, but use as modem
May 23, 2006 8:37PM PDT

My phone has lots of features which I have never used - camera, mp3 player, calendar, address book. These are all better elsewhere, and as I have a tendency to lose phones I don't want other people's personal data lost as well. But I do use it as a modem with my laptop when travelling. GPRS is cheaper than landline dial up and twice as fast. I also have sat nav on my Palm, and link with the phone to get the traffic updates. I have been using mobile phones since they were the size of bricks. The best phone I have ever had was a Sony Ericsson T68i. It was tiny, light, reliable and did everything I wanted including bluetooth. Since then phones have got heavier and battery life is back where it was 15 years ago (ie charge every day rather than once or twice a week) because of all these unnecessary features. Perhaps I should sign myself grumpy old woman!

Old Phone

I'm still using my Alcatel 525 for that very reason. Tiny, lightweight, doesn't need charging more than once a week - long may it last!

Personal calls...and Nextel's BEEP can bite me
May 23, 2006 8:48PM PDT

What is it with people having REALLY personal phone conversations in public places!?

...like 2 feet behind me at the movie theatre concession stand the other day. Seriously, it was something about this woman's daughter and her illness and her messed up life. ***!! SHUT UP and be considerate of others!

And Nextel? Ever stand in line waiting to order lunch and some 13-year-old schmuck is behind you talking about absolutely NOTHING with his buddy...WHO IS SITTING OUTSIDE AT A TABLE! Endless beeping back and forth for twenty minutes. ***!

PLEASE people, GET REAL!

Keep It Simple, Stupid!
May 23, 2006 10:33PM PDT

I've always espoused the concept of a device doing one thing and doing it well. My cell phone is a perfect example of that concept - when I want a camera I use a camera, not a phone.

I too have a camera
May 24, 2006 12:56AM PDT

The original poster to this thread said it all. They have a great camera and I have a great camera. Why do we need some dinky little camera with low resolution for? I had the "pleasure" of using a camera phone this past weekend in a bad lighting situiation, and I got what I saw, a picture with bad lighting. I've seen throw aways that make better pictures.

What do you mostly use your cell phone for

Just to talk...
May 23, 2006 10:59PM PDT

Being of the older generation I have a hard time seeing the number on many of the models. I also spent alot of time finding phones that would let you increase the font size so I did not have to put on reading glasses, while driving, to read the screen.

As a teaher I have to watch for IM, pictures, wireless ear pieces while taking tests. Yes, our school does not permit phones but there are always students that will cheat. So the phone has become a new "cheat sheet" for students. In my day we just wrote it on our thigh and lifted up a hem of our skirts alittle during the test...only kidding?

Cell phones are great!

Cellphones are for phoning
May 23, 2006 11:33PM PDT

I use my cellphone solely for what it is intended to do best: making and receiving phone calls. In fact, it is such an intrusion into my privacy that I keep mine switched off most of the time, using it only when I am mobile and far from a landline telephone.
If I want to take photos, I use my digital camera.
I do not play games.
If I want to listen to music, I use my hi-fi.
If I want to do internet browsing, I use my desktop PC.
If I want to boil water to make coffee, I use an electric coffee kettle.
Cell phones do all of these things less than perfect.

Hank

My Treo 600 is a replacement fot my Handspring Visor Deluxe telephone springboard. Since I used the Handspring Visor it was stuck into primarily for reading books, there has been no real change in my usage. However, I have upgraded my T-Mobile service to a significant amont of hours, I use it a lat more times as a telephone than previously.

cell phone? when did it stop being a phone?
May 24, 2006 2:50AM PDT

Hmmm, lets see.

Silly it is a phone, right? it has a phone book, right?

the only other thing i do with mine is use it as a modem when there isn't a hot spot available for my laptop.

Wink gotta love the upper mid-west.
(hot spot? what is that?)

games? that is what the laptop is for.
Pictures? Uhh, isn't that why we bought those digital cameras?

Maybe a text message once in a while. but those cost more on my cell plan than using it as a modem.

Just my two cents. . . Silly Grin

My additional uses for a cell phone/ grips about other users
May 24, 2006 2:56AM PDT

The features that I love other than being able to basically ditch the paper address book, are the alarm clock and the calender. The quality of the photos are really limited to viewing only on the phone (unless someone has suggestions on how to improve the quality when sending pics to be viewed on a computer).

As far as manufacturers/service providers are concerned, as much as I would love to hate them, they don't make obnoxious customers. The bad thing is, persons well into their adult years are out there chirping and downloading these ringtones at what seems like an equal rate to the teens that we expect these features to appeal to. If I have to wait longer than 30 seconds to leave a message because you are attempting to entertain with some tune you thought was rather catchy, I hang up.

I wish that the offenders could read and comprehend our post.
