One thing I do is click on the little arrow next to the BACK button and it lets me go back a few pages to the one I was at. This usually works for me.
While I can understand that spam is a major problem, it seems to be getting under control. Not that it is being eliminated, but that most ISPs have installed fairly good filtering systems to block spam before it reaches us. I hardly get that much any more.
One thing that really annoys me is the extremely slow response from Yahoo mail servers. Unfortunately, here in Canada, Rogers partnered up with Yahoo to supply most of their internet services. And using Yahoo mail is slooooowww! Definitely not something you would expect from a high speed cable service provider.. however, complaining to Rogers is like spitting in the wind.. they just say it is not their service at fault, but Yahoo. Wish Yahoo would beef up their servers.
i use yahoo mail on a dial up connection, and i get reasonably fast page loading using a simple accelerator. i've also read your scrolling post, and have no problems there either. maybe you have software issues, or a virus,worm, etc.?
One other thing that bugs me.. pages that won't scroll when using the up/down keys, or the page up/page down keys. Why? because in most cases, the web page designer has included a text entry box and put the cursor focus in it. So, instead of scrolling the page, the keys act like they are scrolling the selections in the text entry box.
Case in point: these CNET forums! there is a search box at the top of each page, and the cursor focus is in it.. preventing me from scrolling the page to read the forums. I am sure I am not alone with this grip!
Or does that lock up as well?
From reading here, there's all kinds of crud beyond just spam and pop ups.
no, there is no scrolling, either up or down, left or right (via the cursor movement keys) as long as the cursor focus is in the search box.
If I click anywhere in the page, that changes the focus to the page, and only then will the cursor movement keys scroll the page.
Ok I can fix the popups and spam and just about take care of everything else except the SLOW WEBSITES. I know some of this could be caused by checking software I have installed..
multiple 'Net annoyances. Most of the annoyances mentioned in this forum are ALL a major pain in the butt.
I just hope these are solved or at least minimized, WITHOUT government intervention. Even if the intentions are good, the government often either screws up what it touches or adds a bunch of weird, complex laws.
As for slow sites, that can be caused by various reasons that can be hard, but NOT impossible, to determine.
I've noticed that some ads slow sites down as well as graphical menu bars. Once, I had a slow loading site caused by waiting for the graphical menu bar to load!
Turning graphics off removes site navigation opitions! I shouldn't have to turn graphics off to speed up a site. I like graphics!
